Join us to connect, learn, and advance your knowledge in the geosciences at GEOCON2025.

Organization Overview

The Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP) was organized on Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, September 2, 1945, amidst the ruins of the newly liberated City of Manila when a group of geologists (mostly Americans) attached to the office of the Chief Engineer, GHQ AFPSC, met with a group of Filipino geologists and mining engineers under the chairmanship of Lt. Col. H. G. Scherick. Credit for the initiation of the movement which led to the founding of the Society goes to Major Robert N. Williams and to Dr. Jose M. Feliciano.  Of the 62 original or charter members, 39 were Americans, one Australian, and the rest Filipinos.

Conference Background

The Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP) held its 1st Geological Convention (GeoCon) in Manila from January 9 – 11, 1958, commemorating its 14th anniversary. This convention featured 15 papers and created lively discussions on current geological problems. The Society gained wide support from the different mining companies which helped in making the 1st GeoCon a success.

To spur mineral resources development in the country and to support the Philippine government administration’s various economic programs, the Society convened the 2nd Geological Convention along with the 1st Symposium on the Geology of the Mineral Resources of the Philippines and Neighboring Countries on January 11 – 14, 1967.

Over the years, GeoCon has served a platform for advancing geoscience in the Philippines. Facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange among professionals from industry, academe, and government; supporting professional development through technical sessions and workshops; showcasing Filipino geoscience contributions to local and global issues such has natural hazards, resource management, environmental protection, and sustainable development; and fostering camaraderie within the geoscience community.

Conference Objectives

This year’s convention holds special significance as we proudly commemorate the 80th Oak Jubilee of the Geological Society of the Philippines–a remarkable milestone reflecting eight decades of unwavering service, advancement, and leadership in the geosciences.

In celebration of this historic occasion, GEOCON 2025 will feature special segments honoring distinguished geologists whose work has significantly contributed to the growth of the profession. We will also pay tribute to departed colleagues whose legacies continue to inspire and influence the geoscience community. Moreover, all papers presented at GEOCON 2025 will be of significant value, focusing on making a substantial impact on both the geology profession and the Philippines.

Williams-Feliciano Geology Award

The Williams-Feliciano Geology Award is a prestigious honor presented by the Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP). It is awarded posthumously to geologists who have tragically lost their lives in the practice of geology.
This award also commemorates the inspiring efforts of Major Robert N. Williams and Dr. Jose M. Feliciano, whose dedication led to the founding of the Society.
If you know a geologist who may be eligible for this award, we invite you to honor their legacy by submitting a nomination through the form below and help us recognize their contribution to the field.
